It is misunderstood because it is often poorly explained

People need to understand that it is not referring to ECONOMIC privilege. (Whether or not one comes from a wealthy family.) White privilege stems from a lack of BARRIERS. When a white man is pulled over for a traffic offense, he has never had to fear the officer as long as he complies with what the officer asks (license, registration…); the same cannot be said for a man of color. White people don’t raise suspicion for just walking in a neighborhood after dark; the same cannot be said for people of color.
