I think it is fine but they should be expected to use English when needed

They don't owe you English. Why would they? They don't have to talk to you and you don't have to talk to them. It would undeniably make their lives easier to live in a predominantly English speaking country, but it isn't required of them to learn a whole other language. Learning languages is difficult, and English is one of the top hardest languages to learn. Just let them live their lives.

That's like saying if I go to another country and cannot speak their language, that means I cannot be there. People should be able to travel and find new experiences anyway.
