The "possibility for life" is something that is often thrown around, but the reality is that we don't know if that child will live or die. We also have to consider the quality of life for the unborn child. Abortions are generally sought out by people who cannot afford a child, those who are victims of rape and sexual abuse, and young people who made mistakes and are in no state or position to raise a child. To boil abortion down to a "convenience" is highly reductive. Should someone who is raped have to raise the child of their rapist? Should the young 14 year old girl who made a mistake when her parents didn't teach her anything about sexual health and safety be forced to shoulder the financial, emotional, and physical burden of a child? And will any child raised in these conditions truly have a "potential life"? Is simply "being alive" enough? These are difficult philosophical questions that we have to come to terms with if we want to consider these kinds of arguments. Further more, abortion is a legitimate treatment option for women who have miscarriages, or whose life is in danger during a pregnancy that has gone wrong. This goes back to the fact that abortions are not simply a "convenience" but rather something that can be medically necessary. Those who are pro-life really need to consider what they would do if they themselves were in a position where the options were "die in childbirth" or "get an abortion". This doesn't need to be an all or nothing decision either, Pro-Choice means that the decision is there for women who need it. And those that feel that "being alive" is the only thing that matters can choose to not have abortions.
One final point to bring up what that if we were to consider going down the path of never allowing abortions, what will you do with all of the unwanted children who are abandoned and put up for adoption? Our adoption system is already strained to its limits, and to put further pressure on it would lead to even more problems. Crime rates go down in cities where abortion is legal. The survival rate of pregnancies go up in cities where abortion is legal. The data shows that it is better to have the choice, rather than to let everyone suffer.
